BAC Calculator: What a Blood Alcohol Estimate Can Tell You

Quick answer: A BAC calculator estimates blood alcohol concentration from your weight, sex, how much you drank and how long ago. Three US standard drinks put a 180 lb man near 0.070% and a 140 lb woman near 0.100% before any time passes. It is an estimate, never a clearance to drive.
The number a BAC calculator prints looks precise, and that precision is the most misleading thing about it. The formula is nearly a century old, it assumes a great deal about your body, and it cannot see what you ate.
The formula doing the work
Almost every online BAC tool runs the Widmark equation. Alcohol consumed, converted to ounces, is divided by your body weight multiplied by a distribution constant, then time is subtracted at a fixed elimination rate of roughly 0.015% per hour.
Why weight and sex change the answer so much
Alcohol spreads through body water, not through fat. The distribution constant reflects that: around 0.73 for men and 0.66 for women on average, because women typically carry a higher proportion of fat and so a lower proportion of water.
Work it through. A US standard drink contains 0.6 fl oz of pure alcohol, so three of them is 1.8 oz. For a 180 lb man: (1.8 x 5.14) divided by (180 x 0.73) gives 0.070%. For a 140 lb woman drinking exactly the same three drinks: (1.8 x 5.14) divided by (140 x 0.66) gives 0.100%. Identical drinks, and the woman is over the 0.08% US limit while the man sits just under it. That is the single most important thing the calculator has to teach. Body composition drives it, which is why lean body mass matters more here than total weight alone.
The elimination rate you cannot speed up
Once alcohol is in the blood, the liver works through it at about 0.015% per hour, and no amount of coffee or fresh air moves that dial. Take the 140 lb woman at 0.100%. Two hours later she is at 0.070%, four hours later 0.040%, and zero arrives just under seven hours after she stopped.

Four inputs, and the drink one is where people go wrong.
Enter weight in pounds or kilograms, whichever the tool asks for, and pick the sex option that matches your body composition. Then enter drinks as standard units, not as glasses. A US standard drink is 14 g of alcohol: 12 oz of 5% beer, 5 oz of 12% wine, or 1.5 oz of 40% spirits. A UK unit is smaller, 8 g, so a pint of 4% bitter is 2.3 UK units but only about 1.3 US standard drinks.
ABV is printed on the can, the bottle or the pump clip, and volume times ABV gives pure alcohol. A 660 ml bottle of 7.5% craft beer holds 49.5 ml, close to 5 UK units, or roughly three US standard drinks in a single bottle. Hours goes in last, counted from your first drink rather than your last.
What the number cannot know
Food slows absorption but does not reduce the total. Drinking on an empty stomach pushes the peak higher and sooner, and the calculator assumes an average that fits neither case. Medication, liver condition, age and drinking pace all shift the real figure.
Roadside devices measure breath, not blood, and convert using a fixed ratio that is itself an approximation. So the number you calculated, the number in your blood and the number on the machine are three different things that sit close together. Treat any output within striking distance of a legal limit as a reason not to drive.
Common questions
Could I still be over the limit the next morning? Easily. Someone who reaches 0.16% at 1am and stops drinking then is at roughly 0.055% at 8am, having burned off about 0.105% across seven hours. That is above the 0.05% limit in Scotland and roughly two thirds of the way to the 0.08% limit in England.
Does coffee, food or a cold shower lower BAC? No. They make people feel more alert, which is worse than useless because the alcohol is still there. Only time reduces the number, at that stubborn 0.015% per hour.
Are the US and UK limits the same? Not quite. Most US states use 0.08%, with Utah at 0.05%. England, Wales and Northern Ireland use 80 mg per 100 ml, which is the same as 0.08%. Scotland lowered its limit to 50 mg, or 0.05%, so a drive across the border can change your legal position without changing your BAC.
How accurate is the estimate? Good enough to show patterns, not good enough to rely on. It is a planning tool for deciding how much to drink, or for seeing why body water makes two people react differently to the same round. It is not evidence, and it is not permission.
