To add sales tax: Final price = Original price Γ (1 + tax rate). A $50 item in a location with 8% sales tax: $50 Γ 1.08 = $54. To reverse-calculate (find pre-tax price from a total): Pre-tax price = Total Γ· (1 + tax rate). $54 total Γ· 1.08 = $50 pre-tax.
Our calculator handles both directions β add tax to a pre-tax price, or remove tax from a post-tax total β for any state or custom rate you enter.

Five states have no statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. Note that Alaska, while it has no state sales tax, allows local municipalities to charge sales tax β so some Alaskan cities do have local sales tax. Oregon and New Hampshire are the cleanest no-sales-tax states with no local sales taxes either.
Sales tax is collected by the seller at the point of sale. Use tax is the buyer's obligation to self-report and pay tax on taxable purchases where sales tax was not collected β most commonly out-of-state purchases or online purchases from sellers who didn't collect your state's tax. Use tax rates are identical to sales tax rates.
Most states include a use tax line on their income tax return. The legal obligation exists even if enforcement is limited for small individual purchases.
Sales tax rates and rules change frequently. This calculator provides estimates based on current known rates and should not be used for official business tax filings or compliance purposes. For official state tax rates and exemption rules, always consult your state's department of revenue or a tax professional.

Multiply the price by the combined sales tax rate as a decimal, then add it to the price. For example, $100 at a 7.25% rate is 100 Γ 0.0725 = $7.25 tax, for a $107.25 total.
The US has no national sales tax. Each state sets its own rate, and counties and cities can add local taxes on top, so the combined rate differs from place to place.
Divide the gross price by (1 + rate). For a $107.25 total at 7.25%, the pre-tax price is 107.25 Γ· 1.0725 = $100, so the tax was $7.25.
