About JPG

JPG (sometimes written JPEG, for "Joint Photographic Experts Group") is the most widely used image format in the world. It uses lossy compression β€” discarding data the human eye is least likely to notice β€” to produce dramatically smaller files than PNG or BMP. A typical 1920Γ—1080 photo weighs 200–500 KB as a JPG versus 3–5 MB as a PNG. That size advantage is why nearly every photograph on the web is a JPG.

JPG doesn't support transparency (use PNG or WebP for that) and re-saving the same JPG multiple times slowly degrades quality (because each save adds more compression artefacts). The format also struggles with sharp edges β€” text, line art, and pixel graphics often look ringy or blocky in JPG. Use PNG or WebP for those cases. For photographs, JPG is still the right answer in 2026.
