Dog Years by Breed: Why Size Changes the Maths
A ten-year-old Chihuahua and a ten-year-old Great Dane are nowhere near the same age.
Quick answer: The seven-dog-years-to-one rule does not hold up. A dog's first year is worth roughly 15 human years and the second adds about nine more. After that, size sets the pace: around four human years annually for a small breed, closer to seven for a giant one.
The seven-to-one rule is tidy and wrong. It makes a one-year-old dog the equivalent of a seven-year-old child, which sits badly with an animal that is already fully grown and able to have puppies. Dogs front-load their ageing, then slow to a rate that depends heavily on how big they got.
What the numbers look like at ten years old
Take four dogs, all exactly ten. The old rule says every one of them is 70. Using 15 for the first year, 9 for the second, and a size-based figure for each year after that:
- Small, under 20 lb: 15 + 9 + (8 × 4) = 56
- Medium, 20 to 50 lb: 15 + 9 + (8 × 5) = 64
- Large, 50 to 90 lb: 15 + 9 + (8 × 5.5) = 68
- Giant, over 90 lb: 15 + 9 + (8 × 7) = 80
A 24-year spread between a Jack Russell and a Great Dane born on the same day. That is not a rounding difference. It is the gap between middle age and old age, and it changes what a vet is watching for.
The first two years move fastest
At twelve months a dog is roughly a teenager: physically adult, socially not there yet. By two it is a young adult somewhere around 24. Nothing later in life moves anywhere near that quickly, which is why puppy vaccination and training schedules are measured in weeks rather than years.

Adult weight is the variable that matters. Big dogs grow fast, and whatever pays for that growth seems to pull the rest of the timeline forward with it. Small breeds commonly live into their mid-teens. Giant breeds often do not reach ten. Two dogs can share a birthday and sit in completely different life stages.
Push the table out to fourteen and the gap widens rather than closes. The small dog reaches 15 + 9 + (12 × 4) = 72. The same sum for a giant breed gives 15 + 9 + (12 × 7) = 108, an age very few of them ever see. Because the per-year rate never converges, every additional birthday adds three more human years to the distance between them.
Mixed breeds and rescues with no paperwork
Use adult weight rather than a guess at ancestry. If the dog is still growing, a vet can estimate age from tooth wear well enough for this purpose. Most shelters give an estimated birth date for a rescue, and that estimate is what to enter.

At what age is my dog a senior? It tracks size the same way. Giant breeds are often treated as senior around six, large breeds around seven, and small breeds not until ten or eleven. In practice this is the point where your vet starts suggesting bloodwork at the annual checkup.
Is there an actual formula? One that circulates widely is 16 × ln(age) + 31, using the natural logarithm. For a ten-year-old that gives 16 × 2.303 + 31, or about 68, which lands on the large-breed line in the table above. Run the same formula for a two-year-old and it returns 16 × 0.693 + 31, near 42, against the 24 the table gives. One curve cannot track four size bands at once, so read it as a second opinion rather than the answer.
Why do two calculators give different answers? They use different weight bands and different per-year rates. A five-point gap between two tools is normal and does not mean either one is broken. Compare it against the general dog age calculator, which ignores breed entirely.
Does diet or neutering change the number? Not in any calculator. Body condition, dental care and exercise plainly affect how a dog ages, but none of that is an input here. The number translates elapsed time and nothing more.
