Your healthy weight range is a 40-pound band rather than a target, and here is how to read it.
Quick answer: A healthy weight calculator converts your height into a weight range rather than a single figure, normally the span that produces a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. At 5ft 8in that range runs from about 122 to 164 pounds, a gap of 42 pounds. Anywhere inside the band counts as healthy.
Most people go looking for a target. What the calculator hands back is a bracket, and it is usually wide enough to contain the weight you were at 25 and the weight you are now.
Your healthy range is wider than most people expect
The range is built backwards from BMI. Take your height in metres, square it, then multiply by 18.5 for the bottom of the band and 24.9 for the top. Everything else the calculator does is unit conversion.
Two worked examples
A woman who is 5ft 4in is 1.63m tall. Squared, that is 2.66. Multiply by 18.5 and you get 49kg, or 108 pounds. Multiply by 24.9 and you get 66kg, or 146 pounds. Her healthy range is 108 to 146 pounds, which in stones is 7st 10lb to 10st 6lb. The band is 38 pounds wide.
A man who is 5ft 10in is 1.78m. Squared, 3.16. His range works out at 129 to 173 pounds, or 9st 3lb to 12st 5lb. That is 44 pounds of headroom between the floor and the ceiling of "healthy".
Two people of identical height can differ by three stone and both sit inside the range. That surprises people, and it is the single most useful thing the calculator tells you.

You need one input: height. Enter it in feet and inches, centimetres or metres, then switch the output units to pounds, kilos or stones depending on which one actually means something to you. Some versions also ask for age and sex, which narrows the band slightly, and for frame size, measured by wrapping your thumb and middle finger around the opposite wrist and seeing whether they overlap.
Height accuracy matters more than people assume. An inch of error moves the 5ft 8in band by about four pounds at each end, so the figure you half-remember from a driving licence is not good enough to build a range on. Measure it barefoot, with something flat held level on the top of your head, and keep to the same method whenever you check again.

BMI has no idea what your weight is made of. It sees a number from a scale and a number from a tape measure, and it cannot tell them apart from anyone else's.
Muscle, and the athlete problem
A 6ft 2in man carrying real muscle at 220 pounds has a BMI of 28, which the chart calls overweight even if his body fat sits at 12%. The arithmetic is not wrong. It simply has no way to separate a rugby forward from someone the same weight who has never trained. If you lift regularly, treat the healthy weight range as background information and use a body fat measurement as the number that tracks what you are doing.
The second blind spot is distribution. Two people at the same height and weight can carry it very differently, and weight around the middle behaves differently from weight on the hips. A waist measurement covers that gap and takes ten seconds.
Common questions
What is a healthy weight for my height? Enter your height and read the band. At 5ft 6in it runs roughly 115 to 154 pounds. At 6ft it runs roughly 136 to 183 pounds. There is no single correct figure inside those brackets, which is the point of quoting a range at all.
Should I aim for the middle of the range? Usually not. If you are already inside the band and your waist, blood pressure and energy are fine, there is no health argument for drifting toward the centre. The middle is the middle of an arithmetic span, not an optimum anybody measured.
Why does an ideal weight formula give a different answer? Formulas such as Devine and Robinson return one number instead of a range, and they were originally written for medication dosing rather than health screening. They tend to land in the lower half of the BMI band. Seeing both is worth the extra click, and an ideal weight calculator will put the two figures side by side.
Does the range change with age? The standard band does not move after 20. Some clinicians work with a slightly higher acceptable range for people over 65, on the reasoning that a little extra reserve helps during illness. A general calculator will not make that adjustment for you.
