How Much Bandwidth Do You Actually Need?
Count the streams that run at the same time, not the devices you own, and most homes need far less speed than they buy.
Quick answer: A bandwidth calculator turns what your household does online into megabits per second. Count only the streams running at the same time: roughly 25 Mbps per 4K video, 5 for HD, 3 or 4 for a video call. A busy family of four peaks near 65 Mbps, so a 100 Mbps line has room to spare.
Most people buy internet the way they buy a kettle, assuming a bigger number must be better. Bandwidth does not work like that. Past the point where everything in the house can run at once, extra megabits sit unused and you pay for them every month.
Megabits, megabytes, and the divide by eight rule
Connections are sold in megabits per second (Mbps). Files are measured in megabytes (MB). There are eight bits in a byte, so a 100 Mbps line downloads at about 12.5 MB per second at best.
What that means in real time
A 5 GB game update is 5,000 MB. At 12.5 MB/s that is 400 seconds, near enough seven minutes. On a 30 Mbps connection the rate drops to 3.75 MB/s and the same file takes about 22 minutes. Anyone who has watched a download bar and wondered why the speed reads a tenth of what they pay for has met this conversion, the lowercase b versus uppercase B trap that unit conversion is full of.
Data caps use the other unit again. Streaming at 25 Mbps for three hours moves 270,000 megabits, or about 34 GB. Do that every night and the month costs over 1,000 GB, which is where household allowances start to matter.

The mistake is counting devices. A house with fourteen connected things does not need fourteen lots of bandwidth; the thermostat, the doorbell and the phones in pockets use almost nothing.
Count peak simultaneous use instead. On a weeknight: two 4K streams (50 Mbps), one HD stream in another room (5), a work video call (4), plus a few Mbps of background sync and updates. That is around 65 Mbps at the worst moment of the day. A 100 Mbps plan absorbs it, and a 500 Mbps plan absorbs it identically for more money. Right-sizing beats over-buying, the same way picking the right size air conditioner beats buying the largest unit on the shelf.
Upload is the half people forget
Download figures get the advertising. Upload decides if your video call freezes. A call needs 3 to 4 Mbps in each direction, and cloud photo backup will happily take everything that is left.
Older UK part-fibre lines often pair 67 Mbps down with about 18 up, and older US cable plans can pair 300 down with 10 up. Two people on calls plus a backup running is enough to saturate that. If the household works from home, the upload number is the one to shop on.

Enter the number of each activity type that happens simultaneously, not the number of people or devices in the house. If nobody streams 4K while a call is running, do not enter both.
The real figures are easy to find. Streaming services publish recommended speeds in their help pages, usually 3 to 5 Mbps for HD and 15 to 25 for 4K. Video conferencing apps list their requirement in support documentation. Your router's admin page shows how many devices are actually connected, which is often a surprise. For file transfers, enter size in MB and speed in Mbps and let the calculator do the divide by eight.
Then add about 20% headroom on top of the peak. Shared cable and part-fibre lines rarely deliver their headline number at 8pm.
Common questions
Why does my speed test look fine but video still buffers? Speed tests measure a short burst to a nearby server. Buffering usually comes from Wi-Fi coverage, an overloaded router, or congestion between your provider and the streaming service. A 500 Mbps line is still 500 Mbps at the router and 40 Mbps in the back bedroom.
Does a faster plan make web pages load quicker? Hardly at all. Page loading is dominated by latency, the round trip time for each request, not by capacity. A 2 MB page moves in 0.16 seconds on a 100 Mbps line and 0.02 seconds on a 900 Mbps one, but it arrives as dozens of separate requests, and every one of them waits on a round trip that neither plan shortens.
How much data does an hour of 4K use? At 25 Mbps, an hour is 90,000 megabits, or about 11 GB. HD at 5 Mbps is around 2.2 GB an hour. Music streaming is trivial by comparison, roughly 150 MB an hour at high quality.
Do more devices mean I need more speed? Only if they are all active at once. Ten idle devices consume a rounding error. Two active 4K streams consume more than the other twelve things in the house combined.
