How Long Does It Take to Read 1,000 Words?

The maths here is trivial. What makes a reading time estimate useful, or useless, is picking the right speed for the material, and most tools quietly assume one number for everything they are given.

The arithmetic behind the estimate

A 2,400 word article at 240 wpm comes out at exactly 10 minutes. Drop the assumed speed to 180 wpm, which is closer to real behaviour on a dense explainer, and the same article takes 13 minutes and 20 seconds. That is a 33 per cent swing from one assumption, on identical text.

Going the other way: if you want a piece to display a five minute read at 225 wpm, you need 1,125 words. Writing to a read-time target is really writing to a word count with an extra step in front of it.

Where the 200 to 250 range comes from

It describes silent reading of ordinary prose by adult native speakers, with reasonable comprehension. Skimming for one specific fact is much faster and is not really reading. Working through a contract clause is much slower. Both sit outside the range, which is why a single site-wide number is a rough guide and nothing more.

The estimate breaks on some kinds of content

Scripts, talks, and voiceover

Speaking is slower than reading and the gap is large. A comfortable presentation pace is around 140 wpm, so a five minute conference slot needs about 700 words, not the 1,100 a silent-reading estimate would suggest. Write 1,100 and you will either rush or overrun. For voiceover, 150 wpm is a common working figure, and a 30 second radio advert lands at roughly 75 words.

Audiobooks scale the same way. A 90,000 word novel narrated at 150 wpm runs 600 minutes, which is 10 hours, and that matches what published audiobook lengths actually look like on the shelf.

Text with things in it that are not text

Code blocks, tables, and formulas get read at a fraction of prose speed, if they are read at all. A tutorial that is half code will take far longer than its word count implies. Images run the other way: most tools add a few seconds each, though in practice a reader often gives one a single glance and moves on.

Paste the text or type in a word count, set a words-per-minute figure, and read off the result. If the tool lets you change the speed, change it. Use 250 wpm for light listicles, 200 for standard articles, 150 for technical or academic writing, and 140 when the words are going to be spoken out loud.

Getting an accurate word count first

Paste the body text only. Navigation, footers, author bios, and comment threads inflate a count badly, and a 700 word post can easily look like 1,400.
