Mulch is a three-dimensional material β you need to cover an area to a specific depth. The calculation is therefore a volume calculation:

In the United States, bagged mulch is typically sold in 2 cubic foot bags. This is the standard at Home Depot, Lowe's, and most garden centres. Larger bags (3 cubic ft) are also available. One cubic yard = 27 cubic feet, so you need approximately 13.5 bags of 2 cu ft mulch per cubic yard.
US coverage rule: One 2 cu ft bag covers approximately 12 sq ft at 2" depth, or 8 sq ft at 3" depth.
In the UK, bagged bark mulch is commonly sold in 50-litre bags, though 60L and 70L bags are also available. One cubic metre = 1,000 litres, so you need 20 bags of 50L mulch per cubic metre.
UK coverage rule: One 50L bag covers approximately 0.5 mΒ² at 7.5 cm depth, or 1.0 mΒ² at 5 cm depth.

The most widely used mulch in the US and UK. Produced from chipped tree branches and trunks. Breaks down slowly (2β3 years), improving soil structure as it decomposes. Excellent for borders, paths, and around trees. Available in natural, cedar, pine, and hardwood varieties in the US. In the UK, composted wood chip is popular for garden borders and play areas.
Shredded or nugget-form bark from pine, cedar, or hardwood trees. Bark nuggets are longer-lasting than shredded bark and resist washing in rain β important for UK gardens that experience frequent rainfall. Mini pine bark is popular in the UK. In the US, cypress and cedar bark are popular and add a natural insect-repelling element.
Ideal for vegetable gardens. Straw is cheap, biodegrades in one season, and insulates roots well. It is important to use straw (stems of grain plants) rather than hay (which contains weed seeds). Common in both US and UK market gardens and allotments.
Made from recycled tyres/tires. Non-biodegradable, very long-lasting, and excellent for playground safety surfacing. In the US, rubber mulch must meet ASTM F1292 and F3313 standards for playground use. In the UK, it must meet EN 1177 for playground impact attenuation. Not recommended for food-growing areas due to potential leaching of heavy metals.
Pea gravel, slate chippings, and decorative stone are popular as low-maintenance mulch alternatives in the UK, particularly for contemporary gardens and Mediterranean planting schemes. Bagged mulch wins when you have limited access, need a small quantity, or want a specific premium mulch type. Bulk delivery wins for large garden projects.
The best time to apply mulch in both countries. Pull back any remaining old mulch, lightly fork the soil surface if compacted, then apply fresh mulch. Wait until soil temperatures reach at least 10Β°C (50Β°F) in the UK, or after the last frost date in the US, before mulching around tender plants.
