The countdown is fun for about four seconds. It becomes worth something when you split it into two separate deadlines: the day the money has to be there, and the day the parcels have to go.

Turn the days into a weekly saving figure

114 days is 16 full weeks. If you plan to spend £600 on gifts, food and the extras, that is £37.50 a week from now until the last week of December. Leave it until 9 October and exactly 11 weeks remain, so the same £600 needs £54.55 a week. The budget has not changed. The pressure has.

Set the target on the money, not the date
