Budgeting advice usually assumes the same amount lands in your account every month. If you are freelance, on commission, on shifts, or on a zero-hours contract, that assumption breaks immediately, and most budgets break with it.

The method that survives an irregular income is to budget on your lowest realistic month, not your average. Look back over the last twelve months and find the worst one. That figure becomes your baseline. Every essential cost has to fit inside it: rent or mortgage, utilities, food, transport, minimum debt payments. If your baseline will not cover those, that gap is the real problem to solve, and no budgeting method hides it.

What to do with a good month

Anything above the baseline is not spending money. It goes into a buffer account first, until that buffer holds one full month of essentials. Then you are paying yourself a steady wage out of it, and a thin month stops being an emergency.

After the buffer is full, split the surplus deliberately: a fixed share to savings, a fixed share to debt, a fixed share to spending. Deciding the percentages once, in advance, stops a good month from quietly disappearing.

Work out your baseline and your buffer target below.
