Money goals β€” try it free

A goal without a date is a wish. The useful move is converting an amount into a specific month, because a month can be checked, and a wish cannot.

The arithmetic

Take the amount you need and subtract what you already have. Divide the remainder by what you can genuinely put aside each month. That gives you the number of months, and counting forward from today gives you the date.

If the date is further away than you can accept, only three things can change it: save more each month, reduce the target, or earn a return on the balance while you wait. Nothing else moves it, and seeing that plainly tends to make the choice easier.

Why interest matters more over time

Over a year, interest on a savings balance barely shifts the date. Over five or ten years it shifts it substantially, because you are earning on the interest as well as on the deposits. For short goals, focus on the monthly amount. For long ones, where the money sits matters as much as how much you add.
