Week three is where most budgets die, and it is almost never a discipline problem. It is an arithmetic problem that only becomes visible once the payday cushion is gone.

What actually goes wrong

The usual cause is that the budget was built from the costs you remembered, not the costs you have. Weeks one and two are covered by the money still sitting in the account after payday. By week three that slack is spent, the forgotten costs start landing, and the gap that was always there finally shows.

The second cause is front-loading. Shopping, subscriptions and treats cluster in the days after payday, because that is when the balance looks healthy. Spending evenly across the month is a much stronger habit than spending carefully.

The fix

Divide your spending money by the number of weeks and treat that as a hard weekly figure. Move next week's amount over on the same day each week rather than holding it all in one place. Then rebuild the budget from your last three months of statements, not from memory, so the forgotten costs are in it from the start.
