How Do You Budget When Every Month Is Different?

Months are not identical, and a budget that assumes they are will fail in the first one that is not. Car insurance, a birthday, a dentist appointment, Christmas: none of these are surprises, but they arrive unevenly, so they feel like surprises.
The fix is to separate your costs into two groups. Monthly costs repeat at roughly the same amount: rent, utilities, food, transport. Annual costs arrive once or twice a year but are entirely predictable: insurance, road tax, subscriptions billed yearly, gifts, holidays.
Turn the annual costs into a monthly number
Add up everything in the second group for a whole year, then divide by twelve. That figure is a real monthly cost, even in the months nothing is due. Move it into a separate pot each payday and leave it alone. When the bill arrives, the money is already there and the month absorbs it without drama.
What is left after both groups is genuinely yours to spend or save. Most people find this number is smaller than they assumed, which is uncomfortable but far more useful than a budget that only works in quiet months.
