Financial freedom is an appealing phrase and a vague target, which is why vision boards outnumber plans. Turning it into a number makes it far less abstract and considerably more achievable.

Pick the version you actually mean

For most people freedom is one of three things. It might be a buffer, meaning enough saved to survive losing your income for six months. It might be choice, meaning enough that you could take a lower paid job you prefer. Or it might be full independence, meaning your investments cover your costs without you working.

Each has a different price. A buffer is six times your monthly essentials. Choice is roughly two to three years of the gap between your current pay and the pay you would rather have. Independence is commonly estimated at around twenty-five times your annual spending, which is a large number and worth seeing honestly rather than avoiding.

Then work backwards

Once you have the target, the only remaining questions are how much you put aside each month and how long you are willing to give it. Change either and watch the date move.
